MONTREAT, NC. | The Truett-McConnell men's basketball team upset the 12th ranked Montreat College Saturday afternoon on the road in Montreat North Carolina, 98-81. Shooting almost 43% from behind the arch helped boost the Bears momentum to cruise to an AAC victory.
Head Coach
Jon Yeh spoke highly over his team. "We played with great heart and energy all night. We were able to push the ball in transition and still play half court defense most of the game. We played without two veteran starters most of the day too, as both Jacob and David suffered first half injuries.
Darius Thrower and
Will South stepped up big time in their places. We are starting to shoot the ball from the 3-point line with confidence. Christian, Filipe, and Myles all played well offensively. Most of all, we executed our stuff for the majority of the game. That's something we have struggled to do recently."
The Bears and Cavs battled back and forth until midway of the first half when hot hands from
Myles Monroe and Filipe Goncalves helped TMU go on a 12 point lead. The Bears were able to secure a decent nine point lead going into the half, 42-33.
Coming out within five minutes of play in the second half, TMU caught fire and caught a lead they would never relinquish. The Bears got up as much as 24 points before sealing an AAC victory over Montreat College.
TMU had five players finish in double figures along with Filipe Goncalves scoring a season high 24 points. Also leading for the Bears was senior
Mario Westbrooks (21),
Christian Davis, (17),
Myles Monroe (15), and
Calvin White (10). TMU's bench played a big role outscoring Montreat 32-21.
Not only did TMU execute well offensively, but crashed the boards out rebounding the Cavs 36-27.
The Bears will be back in the Bear Cave this upcoming Wednesday against TN Wesleyan following the women's game at 7:30 p.m.
