TMU Men’s Basketball Runs Record to 4-0

CLEVELAND, GA. |    TMU Men's Basketball Runs Record to 4-0

A stellar second half shooting performance by Truett McConnell University's (TMU) men's basketball squad catapulted the Bears to an 85-57 victory over Columbia International University in front of a boisterous crowd at the Bear Cave. The victory extended TMU's record to 4-0. It is the first time in school history the squad has started 4-0 as an NAIA institution.

Senior David Campbell JR. paced the Bears with 21 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Junior Christian Davis, held shotless in the first half due to foul trouble, went a perfect 4 for 4 from behind the arc after halftime. As a team, TMU was 9 for 14 from long distance in the second half, compared to just 2 of 6 in the first stanza.

"We really haven't been shooting the ball very well this year in games," said Jon Yeh, TMU's head coach. "I told the guys to keep shooting, especially off the pass, and before the end of the year we'll end up being a top 25 team from 3-point range. We looked like it in the second half."

Freshman point guard Myles Monroe continued his heady play, contributing 15 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals while committing just 1 turnover. Altogether, 10 Bears scored on the night.

Jacob Booke's 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Bears a 40-29 lead heading into halftime. It capped a stretch where the Bears outscored CIU by 9 points over the last 4 minutes.

"We were on the verge of extending the lead several times in the first half, but our turnovers led to easy baskets and they kept reeling us in," said Yeh. "The last 4 minutes of the first half were crucial. Then we had just 6 turnovers in the second half, and I think two of them came in the last minute of the game. Combine that with our hot shooting, and there was the game."

On the defensive side, TMU limited the Rams to just 36 percent shooting in the second half. That included just 1 of 10 from long distance for the half and 3 of 20 from 3 for the game.

The Bears will attempt to make it 5-0 when they host Crown College (Tenn.) Saturday on Homecoming in the Bear Cave. The game will mark the last non-conference game before Appalachian Athletic Conference play begins next Tuesday. Tip off is at 4pm following the women's game against Keiser University at 2pm.
