The Truett McConnell men's basketball team had a successful weekend as they defeated Welch College Friday night, 80-56 and Ave Maria University, 81-60 Saturday afternoon in the home opener for the 2017-18 season. The Bears are now 3-0 on the season.
Against Welch College on Friday night, the TMU Bears broke school records being the first time as a 4-year NAIA institution that TMU men's basketball has started 2-0 in season play.
Truett McConnell's David Campbell JR. led all scorers with 20 points for the night against Welch. Jacob Brooke had 12 points, all in the first half.
Calvin White was a big spark off the bench with 12 points.
Darius Thrower had two big 3-pointers mid-way through the second half to give the Bears a spark. Altogether, 13 Bears scored on the night. The Bears played with gritty defense to lead the way, especially in the second half. The Bears made a stretch midway through the half. Welch only scored 4 points in 5 minutes of play.
"It wasn't a very pretty performance on the offensive end, but I felt our second half defense allowed us to extend the lead. We were fairly disciplined in the half court, which is what we worked on all day in practice on Friday," stated Coach Yeh.
The men advance with their winning streak into Saturday's match against Ave Maria finishing 81-60 for the night. The men will continue their strong winning season back again in the Bear Cave on Tuesday night against Columbia International University at 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
