Bears Shocked as Skyhawks Snatch Dramatic Overtime Win

West Point, GA - The Truett-McConnell men's soccer team concluded their 2014 season with a dramatic double-overtime loss to the Skyhawks of Point University. The Bears 2-1 loss occurred in the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament.

From the first whistle, the Bears looked to be the team to win the match. Only two minutes into the game, Matthew Robertshaw played a great ball over the top for Josiah Saydee, who ran in to slot home. The Bears dominated the first half offensively, relentlessly attacking the Skyhawk defense. At the half, the Bears were leading 1-0.

The second half proved to be a new game as the Skyhawks came out strong, with both teams creating several chances throughout the half. For the Bears, Penzi Kakoma gave the team a two-goal lead when he got on the end of a Saydee cross to knock the ball past Point's onrushing keeper.

Although both teams continued to attack, the Bears looked like they would never concede a goal. With four minutes remaining, the Bears defense faltered as a seemingly-harmless cross came into the box. As the clock hit the one-minute mark, the Skyhawks were awarded a penalty kick. In a split second, a goal by the Skyhawks would send the game into overtime.

At the start of overtime, Josh Bargary looked to finish the game for the Bears, but barely missed getting on the end of a cross to score. The Bears created several more chances to score, and they looked to be heading for victory. However, with only one minute remaining in the first overtime, the Skyhawks got a lucky bounce, broke well, and sealed their passage to the next round.

"It was a heartbreaking loss, and one that never looked like happening. The guys played hard on the night, but it was not to be and the season ended here. The Bears would like to thank Seniors Rudy Vasquez, Craig Stephenson, and Ronan Currie for their hard work and dedication to the program," said the coaches of the men's soccer team.

The Bears finish their 2014 season with an 8-11 overall record, and a record of 2-7 in the AAC.
