Laurinburg, NC - On Tuesday, October 21st, the Truett-McConnell women's soccer team went on the road to face the St. Andrews Knights in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) match-up.
The Lady Bears and the Knights battled through the first half with neither team able to break through for an opening goal. Both teams had several chances, but the half would come to a close at 0-0.
In the second half, both teams went on the offensive and launched several attacks on each other. The Knights had the first real chance on goal when their attacking midfielder broke through the Bears defense on a tactical breakaway. However, freshmen goalkeeper
Anna Scogin was more then up to the task as she pulled off a brilliant save to keep the score 0-0.
The game would continue to be wide open, and about midway through the second half the Lady Bears continued to put more pressure on the Knights. The Bears offense created several opportunities that led to near misses by the striking duo of
Bianca Clark and
Katie McAdams. Finally, after several more chances by both teams, the game would remain tied as the two teams would head to overtime.
In the first overtime, the Lady Bears came out of the gate flying and immediately went on the attack. Once again, the Lady Bears created several good opportunities, but were still unable to find the back of the next.
In the second overtime, the Knights gave an even bigger offensive push, but the Lady Bears defense was more then up to the task. As the second overtime came to a close, the game would end in a 0-0 draw. The draw was the fifth shutout of the year by the Bears defense and goalkeeper, as well as the third in conference play.
Head Coach
David McDowell said, "The girls put in a very solid performance against a tough team. We defended well as a unit and created some very good chances. I am proud of how well the girls battled today and the character they showed to never give up. I am very happy with how our mentality as a team has grown stronger as the season has progressed and this bodes well as we get closer to the postseason."
The Lady Bears are now 7-4-4 on the season and 5-2-2 in AAC play. The Bears will return to action when they visit Point University this Saturday afternoon in a 3:00 PM kickoff. This will be the AAC finale for the Lady Bears.
