Women's Soccer Ties with Skyhawks in AAC Match

Cleveland, GA - On Saturday, October 25th, the Truett-McConnell Women's Soccer Team visited the Point Skyhawks in their last Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game of the regular season.

The Lady Bears came flying out of the gate at the start of the match, as sophomore Paige Williams got the scoring started for the Lady Bears only seven minutes into the game. Williams was able to stay composed as she beat her defender and struck the ball past the diving Skyhawks goalkeeper.

As the game continued, the Lady Bears maintained the momentum and continued to create more chances. However, the Skyhawks were able to score an equalizer only seconds before the half.

In the second half, the Lady Bears and the Skyhawks battled for the lead with both teams creating chances. It would be the Lady Bears who would find the back of the next first. The goal came when senior Meagan Taylor was able to beat her defender on a corner kick and head a well-timed cross past the Skyhawks keeper.  The goal was assisted by freshmen Katey Griggs from a corner. This goal marks Taylor's 9th goal of the 2014 Lady Bears campaign.

The lead didn't last long for the Lady Bears as the Skyhawks once again found an equalizer with only four minutes left in the game. As the game went into first and second overtime, a winning goal was not to be found despite battling efforts by both teams. The match came to a close with a score of 2-2.

Head Women's Soccer Coach David McDowell said, "I am proud of the girls with how they battled today. It was another tough conference game and they stuck to the game plan very well. I thought we had done enough to get the win but unfortunately they got the late equalizer. We've now seen everyone in the conference and we feel good going into the postseason. The team is working very well together and the belief, along with the camaraderie, is there. This is a strong group of girls that stick together and we will approach the postseason with the hope of winning the AAC title."

This draw gives the Lady Bears an AAC conference record of 5-2-3 and an overall record of 7-4-5. The opponent and location for the AAC playoffs will not be determined until Saturday, November 1.

Before the conference tournament, the Lady Bears return to the field on Thursday, October 30th when they host the Crusaders of Tennessee Temple, a non-conference opponent. It will be the last home game for the Bears as they will recognize their seniors.
