Herrera is entering his third year as the Director of Volleyball in 2026.
In just two seasons as indoor volleyball head coach, Herrera has already guided the program to numerous conference and national recognitions, including one AAC All-Conference 2nd-Team player (Julia Fisher - 2025), nine NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 15 AAC All-Academic Team selections. During his tenure, the program set two new records in 2025: most team service aces in a season (212) and most player service aces in a single season (61 - Emma Boland).
As beach volleyball head coach, Herrera has helped the Lady Bears receive votes in multiple NAIA Top 10 Ratings coaches polls, and has totaled 46 wins with a .545 win percentage in coference play over three seasons. Herrera also coached players Elizabeth Franklin and Kaleigh McFarland to an AVCA Top Flight award in 2025, an honor given to pairs who won at least 75% of their matches in a season. Franklin and McFarland were one of just 12 NAIA pairs to receive that recognition nationally.
Herrera joined TMU with over 20 years of experience coaching indoor volleyball, beach volleyball and mentoring athletes in their spiritual walks with Christ.
In 2016, Herrera was named the GISA Coach of the Year, after leading the Trinity Christian School Lady Lions to victory in the GISA State Championship. Herrera spent time coaching the high school volleyball program at Trinity Christian School in Sharpsburg, Georgia until 2019 where he took the head coaching position at former Appalachian Athletic Conference member Point University. Herrera led the Skyhawks 2019 team to the National Tournament for the first and only time in Point Universtiy program history.
Herrera, a Cuba native, came to the United States with his family in 1983, where he lived the remainder of his adolescent years in Miami, Florida. He is a 1993 graduate from Atlantic High School in Delray Beach and holds a bachelor's degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and a Master's in Christian Leadership from Liberty University (2012), while also being ordained as a Minister.
Herrera and his wife Kristina have been married for over 30 years, and have three children, Joey, Emily and Jacob.
