CLEVELAND, Ga. – A goal in the 84
th minute by
Joanna Funes secured the win for No. 6 Truett McConnell women's soccer with a 1-0 score against No. 22 Georgia Gwinnett Saturday night.
It's the second goal of the season for the sophomore and her fifth point overall on the year.
Agathe Braud provided the assist on the corner kick for her second on the season, her fourth point total.
The Lady Bears put forward nine total shots with five shots on goal. The Grizzlies outshot the home team with 12 total but created less shots on target with only three. Truett had more corner opportunities (6-1) and committed less fouls (5-11).
After a shot by
Lena Poulain in the second minute, the play on the field stalled as both teams created nothing until a shot by GG at 17:58.
Isabella Hodson shot twice in the 19
th minute, one being saved by goalie Elle Sarter and the other sailing wide right of the net.
Both teams shot from minute 25:00 through minute 30:00, but none found the back of the net. A shot by the Grizzlies, said by goalkeeper
Noa del Rio in the 32
nd minute, was the last action of the first half.
Georgia Gwinnett started the second half with applied pressure as two shots were forced in the first three minutes. Another three shots, one of which was saved by del Rio, were produced from the away team, resulting in five shots in the first ten minutes of the second half.
Isabelle Allen collected the first shot of the second half for the Lady Bears, forcing a save from the goalkeeper.
Anabella Moron collected the game's lone yellow card in minute 61, creating a chance for Georgia Gwinnett. In the 73
rd minute, a corner kick by Braud created a header shot for
Erin Ward, but it was saved by Sarter.
The Grizzlies had two shots in minute 75, one of which hit the crossbar with the other one being blocked. In the 84
th minute, a corner kick by Braud set up the shot by Funes to take the lead, putting TMU up 1-0. GG had one more chance with a corner, but the shot was wide right, sealing the win for the Lady Bears.
Truett is back on the pitch next Wednesday for an Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship rematch against Tennessee Wesleyan on Sept. 23 at 2 p.m.
