Lady Bears Take Down Buffs in Four Sets

Julia Fisher and Anna Forbus led with double-digit kills.

MILLIGAN, Tenn. – Truett McConnell women's volleyball (19-7, 9-3 AAC) secured Appalachian Athletic Conference win number nine with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-22) win over Milligan (1-14, 1-10 AAC) Thursday evening.

Two Lady Bears in Julia Fisher and Anna Forbus led the way with double-digit kills on the night while Caroline Yeager produced 23 assists on the set. The junior also had five aces while Forbus and Elizabeth Cook both contributed 4.0 total blocks.

The Buffs started set one with the early lead at 8-5. With three unanswered points by the away team, the margin between the two teams was at a single point. A 5-2 scoring run put Milligan up 18-14 midway through the set, and another 4-0 run put the home team up by seven late. Truett fought back with a 5-1 scoring run to cut the deficit to three, but two final points by the Buffs put them up 1-0 in the match.

In set two, it was the Lady Bears opening with the advantage, scoring seven of the first ten points to start. A combined 8-3 run by TMU gave it the advantage with a 16-10 score. Late in the set with a 21-15 Lady Bear lead, three attack errors and a kill by Cook secure the set and tied the match 1-1.

Another fast start for Truett in the third set resulted in a 10-4 score. The Buffs weren't keen on going down quickly, however, put up a 5-2 run to draw within a trio of points. TMU responded with a 5-1 run with three teams kills, forcing a Milligan timeout. The home team forced the issue to within as little as four points late, but the Lady Bears were too much, winning the set and taking the match lead.

After a 7-3 start for the away squad in set four, the Buffs score six of the next seven points to go up by one. A 5-2 stretch put TMU back in front, but Milligan scored three of the next four to tie things up at 14-14.

Helped by three attack errors, Truett went out in front by three late in the set. Two 4-1 runs occurred from both sides, one by the Buffs to tie the set and another one by the Lady Bears to win the set, closing the match in four.

TMU is back home next Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. start time vs, Spartanburg Methodist College at the Harris Athletic Complex.
