TMU takes down Bulldogs, 67-62

CLEVELAND, Ga. (February 3, 2024) – On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team hosted Tennessee Wesleyan University for an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up, where the Lady Bears found success, 67-62, after a nail-biting second half. TMU rises to an overall record of 9-14, 8-9 AAC, while TWU falls to a record of 9-10, 7-10 AAC.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first quarter, TWU was first on the board, with Alexis Brewster quickly responding with a layup in the paint. Brewster continued to find luck at the basket, putting up another layup and free throw, when a three-pointer by the visiting team tied up the game. Both teams battled to take the lead, with TMU's Brinkley Kate Reed finding a good layup and free throw to increase the Lady Bears score by three. The Bulldogs responded with good baskets of their own, when a clutch jump shot by Kayleigh Kelley, tied the game 10-10 as both teams entered the second quarter even. The second quarter saw the bulldogs up first once again, with a jump shot by Kelley following closely behind. The Lady Bears continued to increase their score with two layups and a free throw by Brewster, when a seven point run by the opposing team, threatened a marginal gap. TMU was not shaken as a layup by Reed decreased the gap to five, entering the half, 27-32.
 
The third quarter saw the Lady Bears up first with two layups by Ava Queen. TMU continued to fight in hopes of regaining the lead, when three pointers by Reed and Alysee Dobbs put TMU up by one. Both teams fourth back and forth to retain the lead, when a layup by Brewster sent the Lady Bears up by one as they entered the fourth quarter, 48-47. In the final quarter, TWU once again found the first basket, but the Bulldogs lead was short lived as a three-pointer by Kacie Williams and a layup by Brewster, put TMU up by four. A last chance effort by the Bulldogs attempted to bridge the gap, but was unable to stop a Lady Bears win, ending the game with a final score of 67-62. 
 
LEADERS
Brewster led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds, while going 4-4 in free throws. Reed followed closely behind with 16 points and going 7-7 at the free throw line. K. Williams and Kelley were both featured contributing 11 points apiece, while Dobbs tallied seven points.
 
UP NEXT
TMU will be back in action, Saturday, February 10, as the bears travel to compete against Union College in an AAC match-up. Tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
