TMU concludes season in AAC quarterfinals

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (February 29, 2024) - The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team concluded their 2023-24 season on Thursday, where the No. 9 seed Lady Bears fell to the Appalachian Athletic Conference Regular Season Champions and No. 1 seed Bryan College with a final score of 75-49. TMU finished the season with an overall record of 12-18, 10-12 AAC. 

PLAY-BY-PLAY 
Bryan stole the lead early with a seven-point run, but a layup by Alexis Brewster put TMU in the game. The Lady Bears played sharp on defense to hold off Bryan, while a layup by Sydnie Smith and a final shot in the paint by Alysee Dobbs kep the lead in range (8-16). The Lady Bears proved a worthy opponent in the second quarter as a jump shot and three-pointer from Mahalah Stewart cut at the deficit, followed by three layups and a shot at the three-point arc from Brewster (20-28). Clutch shots at the free throw line from Brinkley Kate Reed and Destinee Lovejoy offered hope in clinching the lead at the half with TMU down by two (29-31). 

Bryan struck first in the third quarter, but a jump shot from Reed and two free throws from Stewart saw TMU work to even the play. A late rally by the Lions forced the Lady Bears to work under pressure for the reminder of the quarter, entering the final quarter with a score of 43-57. Bryan pulled ahead with multiple strong runs, while free throws from Smith and a layup from Kacie Williams added TMU's final point sof the game, resulting in a final score of 49-75. 

LEADERS
Stewart led the way once again for the Lady Bears with 15 points and going 3-4 at the three-point arc. Brewster recorded 13 points on the day, followed by Reed who had seven points and Smith and Dobbs who individually had four points.
