TMU bounces back with win over Knights at home

CLEVELAND, Ga. (February 21, 2024) – The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team hosted Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent St. Andrews University on Wednesday, where the Lady Bears battled through every quarters to secure the win with a final score of 71-64. TMU is now sitting at an overall record of 10-17, 9-12 AAC, while St. Andrews falls to a record of 6-16, 6-16 AAC.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
TMU was hot from the start with a nine point run, sparked by three shots from Alexis Brewster and shot from the three-point arc by Sydnie Smith (9-0). St. Andrews worked to decrease the deficit, but a three-pointer by Ava Queen and a layup by Smith kept the Lady Bears ahead by eight. Two good free throws by Alysee Dobbs and a layup from Destinee Lovejoy  kept TMU ahead, while shots by the Knights put the lead in range (21-17). With SAU only by three, a clutch free throw by Queen and a layup from Brewster kept the Lady Bears on top, followed by a seven point run to make the score 40-32 at the half.
 
The third quarter proved in favor of the Knights as TMU was forced to work hard under pressure. A layup by Kayleigh Kelley kept the lead in range, but SAU entered the final quarter with the advantage (47-49). TMU gained speed to take back the lead in the fourth quarter with four consecutive Lady Bears shots, featuring a good free throw and layup by Brinkley Kate Reed, and a layup and three-pointer by Brewster. Shots from the Knights kept the leader undecided, until a good three-pointer by Dobbs shifted gears for TMU and the game was ultimately put out of reach with two good free throws from Brewster (71-64).
 
LEADERS
Brewster led the way for the Lady Bears with a double-double of 25 points and 16 rebounds, along with going 10-17 in field goals and 3-4 at the free throw line. Lovejoy recorded 11 points with six rebounds, followed by Reed who had nine points and six rebounds, and Smith who had eight points and six assists.
