Lady Bears fall in season opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (October 30, 2024) – On Tuesday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team opened up their 2024-25 season on the road against Carolina University, where the Lady Bears suffered a tough loss, 45-39. TMU opens the season with an overall record of 0-1, while CU rises to a record of 3-0.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first quarter, CU was first on the board with a good jump shot. TMU followed closely behind with a jump shot of their own by Alexis Brewster. Both teams continued to battle, with the Bruins taking a marginal lead over the Lady Bears, forcing TMU to work from behind. A final good three-pointer by TMU's Alissa Winters attempted to bridge the early gap but was not enough as the Lady Bears trailed by five entering the second quarter. The second quarter saw TMU first to the basket with a layup and jump shot by Kacie Williams and Brewster. Good baskets by the opposing team continued to increase the score, but was quickly disrupted as baskets by Jordynn Webster, Brinkley Kate Reed and Brewster made it a two-point game heading into the half, 22-24.
 
The third quarter saw the Bruins once again first on the board., increasing their lead to seven points. A good free throw and layup by Brewster attempted to change the tide of the quarter but was not enough as a three-pointer and good free throw by the opposing team created a 10-point scoring gap. The final quarter saw both teams battle eager to earn the win. The Lady Bears worked hard offensively, banding together to overpower the Bruins as good free throws by Destinee Lovejoy and Brewster, paired with a good three-pointer by Mahalah Stewart made it anyone's game. A last chance effort by the Lady Bears attempted to close the gap, but was ultimately unsuccessful, falling to a final score 39-45.
 
LEADERS
Brewster led the way recording a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Williams followed with seven points and five rebounds, going 3-3 in field goals. Webster was featured recording four points.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, November 5 as they host Toccoa Falls College for the Lady Bears home opener inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena. Tip off set for 5:30 p.m.
