Women's Basketball brings home AAC win against Brenau

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (January 27, 2024) – On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled to compete against Brenau University for an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up, where the Lady Bears proved capable of bring home the conference win with a final score of 71-65. TMU rises to an overall record of 9-13, 8-8 AAC, while BU falls to a record of 8-10, 7-9 AAC. 
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first quarter, BU was first on the board with Alexis Brewster quickly responding with two good free throws. The Lady Bears continued to increase their score with back-to-back three pointers, one a piece by Ava Queen and Brewster. Eager to create a marginal lead, TMU continued to force their way to the basket as Brewster and Brinkley Kate Reed put up four more points. Sydnie Smith joined the action at the end of the quarter, putting up two good layups and a buzzer beater three pointer to put TMU up by 14 as they enter the next quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Bears made their mark early with another layup by Smith. A jump show by Brewster, paired with a three pointer by Mahalah Stewart continued to prove the Lady Bears are a tough competitor as they fought to widen the gap. Two three-pointers and layups by the opposing team attempted to give BU control of the game but was short lived as a good three pointer by Chloe Williams and two good free throws by Smith kept TMU up by six as they entered the half, 39-33. 
 
The third quarter started of slow, with both teams struggling to find a good basket. TMU final broke the spell with a good layup by Brewster followed by a three pointer by Queen. The Lady Bears continued to work together as a team recording 19 points in the third and holding the Golden Tigers to 11 points, as TMU entered the fourth quarter up by 14. In the final quarter, Brewster once again started both teams off with a layup in the paint. A last chance effort by BU saw the Golden Tigers decrease the gap by 10 points, but it was ultimately not enough to stop TMU from taking home the win, with a final score of 71-65.
 
LEADERS
Brewster led the way for the Lady Bear, recording a double-double, featuring 28 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, while going 4-4 in free throws. Smith followed with 16 points and five rebounds, recording four assists, and going 7-10 at the free throw line. Ava Queen was seen tallying six points and four rebounds, while Destinee Lovejoy, Stewart, and Kacie Williams had four points apiece.
 
UP NEXT
TMU will be back in action on Wednesday, January 31, as they head to face-off against Milligan University for an AAC match-up. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
