Women's Basketball finds victory at home

CLEVELAND, Ga. (January 20, 2024) – On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team hosted Bluefield University for an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up, where the Lady Bears recorded a dominating win over the Rams, 78-55. TMU rises to an overall record of 6-12, 6-7 AAC, while BU falls to a record of 2-17, 2-12 AAC.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The first quarter began with the Rams first on the board. Destinee Lovejoy quickly responded for the Lady Bears with a layup in the paint. Both teams battled it out for an early lead when three layups by Alexis Brewster, Lovejoy, and Kacie Williams, sent TMU ahead by four. The Lady Bears did not let up on their hold over the Rams as two three points, one apiece by Sydnie Smith and Chloe Williams, increased the score by 10. BU found a slight change in momentum as the first quarter ended but was not enough to retain a lead, entering the second quarter, 20-14. In the second quarter, TMU was up first with a layup by Brinkley Kate Reed. Eager to change the tide of the game, the Rams pushed back against the Lady Bears, creating a slim margin of two points, but TMU was not shaken as two consecutive layups by Ava Queen and one by C. Williams kept the Lady Bears lead at the half, 38-32.
 
In the third quarter, the Lady Bears showed out on offense, holding the Rams to nine points, and scoring 20 points of their own. Brewster was featured recording a good jump shot and two three-pointers to begin the quarter, rolling the momentum for TMU. The home team continued to prove to be a tough competitor in the third quarter, attacking the basket and scoring five layups and a jump shot, putting the Lady Bears in prime position as the entered the final period of the game, 58-41. In the fourth and final quarter, K. Williams was first to score with another layup by Brewster not far behind. A last chance effort by the Rams attempted to change the result of the game but was ultimately not enough to disrupt another Lady Bears win, securing a final score of 78-55.
 
LEADERS
Reed led the way for TMU with 18 points, going 7-11 in field goals and 3-5 at the free throw line. Brewster followed, recording a double-double, featuring 17 points and 15 total rebounds, going 3-3 at the free throw line and 2-3 at the three-point arch. K. Williams was seen contributing 12 points and six rebounds, while Queen recoded eight points and Lovejoy with six points and four assists. 
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bears will be back in action on Monday, January 22, as they travel to face AAC opponent, Tennessee Wesleyan University. Tip-off set for 4:00 p.m.
