Bears fall by slim margins in series opener against Bryan

CLEVELAND, Ga. (April 29, 2023) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team hosted Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Bryan College inside the TMU Baseball Complex, where a late offensive burst from the Bears was not enough for the Lion's consistent offense (8-10). TMU falls to a record of 33-12, 17-8 AAC, while the Lions rise to a record of 29-16, 19-8 AAC.

PLAY-BY-PLAY | 8-10

The Lions took an early lead in the top of the second and third inning, recording three runs on four hits (0-3). The Bears responded in the bottom of the third with a Caleb Williams and Matthew Redmond single to place runners in scoring position. A well-placed ball from Mikal Mascarello pushed TMU's first run across followed by an Andrew Johnston single to right field to tack on another run (2-3). Both teams were evenly matched until the Lions rallied ahead with three runs on five hits in the top of the sixth to create a large margin (2-6). The Bears sparked their momentum in the bottom of the sixth by capitalizing on defensive errors. A single from Jakob Karvelas combined with a double from Ethan Roberts cut the Lions' lead (4-6). A clutch single from Redmond and Mascarello cut the Lion's lead to one (5-6). The bottom of the seventh featured a Tanner Griffith double to center field and an electric two-run blast from Jordan Kenty to give the Bears the lead (7-6). The Lions did not settle as the bottom of the eighth saw four runs recorded on four hits to collect their final runs of the day and recapture the lead (7-10). The Bears worked to chip at the deficit with singles from Redmond and Mascarello paired with a sacrifice fly from Johnston but was ultimately not enough as the Bears fell short, 8-10.

Redmond led the way offensively, going 3-5 at the plate with two runs while Mascarello was 2-5 at the plate with two RBIs. Kenty was seen going 2-5 at the plate with two RBIs and one run while Karvelas was 2-4 with one run.
