MONTREAT, N.C. (March 20, 2023) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team traveled on Monday to face Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Montreat College for game three of the series, where the Bears fell to a heartbreaker in the final inning (7-8). TMU drops to a record of 18-9, 8-6 AAC, while the Cavaliers rise to 16-14, 9-6 AAC.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Cavaliers were first on the board with one run on one hit in the bottom of the first inning (0-1). TMU responded in the top of the fourth with a Mikal Mascarello double, where hits from Dylan Sargent and Matthew Redmond tied the score (1-1). The Cavaliers were persistent, adding on another run in the bottom of the fifth (1-2). The Bears responded quickly and sparked their momentum with a double from Mascarello paired with Sargent capitalizing on defensive errors. A hit by pitch for Redmond loaded the bases, followed by a Caleb Ramsey walk and Caleb Williams sacrifice fly to give TMU the lead (3-2). An Ethan Roberts hit by pitch once again loaded the bases, where an Andrew Johnston and Tanner Griffith single raised the Bears' score (6-2). The Cavaliers were resilient, recording three more runs on three hits to close the margin to one (6-5). TMU scored their final run of the game off a Ramsey blast to right field, but the Cavaliers were triumphant in pushing three runs across the plate in the bottom of the ninth, leaving the Bears to fall (7-8).
LEADERS
Johnston led the way offensively, going 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs, while Griffith was 2-5 at the plate with one RBI. Mascarello was seen going 2-4 at the plate with two runs, while Redmond was 2-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run.
