Baseball falls to No. 3 TWU by slim margins

CLEVELAND, Ga. (February 17, 2023) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team traveled on Friday to face Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, No. 3 Tennessee Wesleyan University, where the Bears fell short in game one of the series by slim margins (0-1). TMU falls to a record of 8-3, while the reigning AAC Champions rise to a record of 7-0.

PLAY BY PLAY 
Both teams were evenly matched, while the Bears were seen collecting four hits over nine innings. Pitcher Caleb Johnson kept the hot hitting Bulldogs at bay until the bottom of the second inning when TWU scored their lone run of the game off a sacrifice fly (1-0). In the fifth inning, the Bears saw a walk from Jake Edwards and Ethan Roberts paired with a single from Caleb Ramsey to put runners in scoring position but were unable to capitalize. In the sixth inning, a single from Dylan Sargent and Tanner Griffith had runners in scoring position once again, but TMU was unable to push the tying run across. Pitcher Hank Simonds was able to keep the Bulldogs silent for the remainder of the game, leaving TMU to fall 1-0. 

LEADERS 
Griffith, Roberts, Ramsey and Sargent each tallied a hit apiece. Pitcher Johnson recorded two strikeouts, while allowing two hits over three innings. Simonds recorded two strikeouts and only allowed six hits over five innings. 

UP NEXT
The Bears remain in Athens, Tennessee tomorrow Saturday, February 17, to complete the AAC series. Game one of the doubleheader is set for a 12:00 p.m. start time.
