Lady Bears gain momentum to finish on top against Union

BARBOUVILLE, Ky. (January 28, 2023) - The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled to face Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Union College, where the Lady Bears secured a 53-46 victory over the Buffaloes due to a strong second half. TMU rises to a record of 6-15, 5-13 AAC, while the Buffs fall to 3-17, 4-14 AAC.
 
PLAY BY PLAY
The Lady Bears fell behind early but layups from Sydnie Smith and Faith Lovejoy put TMU on the board. The Buffs continued to add to their lead, while a layup from Lila Luettich closed the first quarter (7-18). In the second quarter, the Bears were hot out of the gates with a tip-in from Luettich, followed by a layup from Camilla Callihan. A three-point shot by Alysee Dobbs cut the lead to four points, follow by a clutch layup from Dobbs paired with a layup from Callihan to give TMU their first lead of the game. Both teams were neck-and-neck and a final layup from Callihan sent TMU into the half trailing, 25-30.
 
In the third quarter, the Bears worked quick to cut the margin with a layup from Dobbs and three-point shot from Tia Shelton. The Buffs responded with shots of their own to add to their lead, but a three-pointer from Shelton and free throws from Dobbs and Shelton put the game within two points going into the final quarter (40-42). In the fourth quarter, a shot behind the three-point arc from Smith gave the Bears the lead, where layups from Quan Holton and Dobbs created a large deficit. The Buffs were unable to respond and a last-minute layup from Holton ultimately secured a 53-46 victory.
 
LEADERS
Dobbs led the way with 13 points, going 5-10 in the paint and 2-4 at the free-throw line. Callihan followed with 11 points, going 5-11 in the paint with four rebounds. Shelton recorded nine points, going 2-4 behind the three-point arc and 1-1 behind the free-throw line. Smith tallied six points, going 1-2 behind the three-point arc and 1-2 at the free-throw line.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bears return to the Benjamin F. Brady Arena on Tuesday, January 31 to face AAC rival Columbia International University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
