Softball concludes weekend play with AAC sweep

CLEVELAND, Ga. (April 2, 2022) - On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University softball team hosted Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, Bluefield College, where the Lady Bears secured their third straight conference sweep. TMU improves to a record of 17-16, 10-2 AAC, while the Rams fall to 8-16, 3-13 AAC. 

GAME 1 | 8-0

In game one, the Lady Bears scored early with a Lexi Simonton walk and two stolen bases. A Mattie Brooks single scored Simonton from third (1-0). The second inning saw a Justine Kennington single that scored off an Anna Thomas single (2-0). Another Simonton walk followed by a Briley Lawson three-run homerun increased the score to 5-0. In the fifth inning, Kyndall Gipson doubled, followed by another Brooks single and a Kennington single to end the inning (7-0). The run-rule came into effect when a Brooks triple scored Gipson, giving TMU an 8-0 victory.

LEADERS

Brooks led the way offensively, going 3-4 at the plate with three RBI's. Kennington followed going 3-3 with one RBI. B. Lawson was 2-4 with three RBI's, while Thomas was 2-3 with one RBI.

Pitcher Kyleigh Sanders threw five innings with nine strikeouts and only allowed one hit. Ellie McCloy also had one strikeout on the day.

GAME 2 | 5-1

In game two, the Lady Bears had a later start. The bottom of the second saw a Brooks walk, followed by a Rachel Morgan walk. A Kennington line drive scored Brooks on a fielder's choice (1-0). In the third, a Simonton single, a Gipson walk and a Brooks walk put runners in scoring position. Morgan doubled to left field to score two to end the inning (3-0). The Rams scored their only run of the day in the fourth inning (3-1). TMU retaliated with another run in the fifth after a B. Lawson single, Gipson single and Brooks walk (4-1). The final run of the day came from a Thomas single where a sacrifice fly from Camryn Halliday scored Thomas (5-1).

LEADERS

Simonton, B. Lawson and Gipson were all 1-3 at the plate, where Simonton and Gipson tallied one run apiece. Morgan was 1-2 at the plate with two RBI's. 

Pitcher Karley Hobbs threw a complete game, tallying three strikeouts and only allowing five hits. Hobbs gathers her ninth win of the season.

UP NEXT

The Lady Bears travel to Waleska, Ga. on Monday, April 4, to face AAC foe, Reinhardt University. Game times are set for 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
