CLEVELAND, Ga. (April 1, 2022) – On Friday, the Truett McConnell University baseball team hosted Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, Union College. The Bears attacked early and showed no mercy for the Bulldogs, winning 22-5. TMU improves to 16-13, 9-7 AAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 5-18, 4-12 AAC.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Bulldogs were first to strike with one run in the first inning (0-1), but the Bears retaliated hard with 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning. A Mikal Mascarello single scored two, followed by a Brady Wilson walk to score one (3-1). Walks from Sam Reed and Will Ingram scored two more, followed by Tanner Griffith and Andrew Johnston singles (7-1). Isaac Mullanack and Ethan Roberts singled to add two more, followed by a Wilson three-run homerun and a Jake Edwards homerun (14-1). The Bulldogs were able to score three more in the third inning off of fielder's choices (14-4). In the fourth, TMU scored three more runs off of misplayed balls (17-4). The Bulldogs scored their remaining runs in the fifth, but TMU added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure their dominating win, 22-5.
LEADERS
Wilson led the way offensively, going 2-2 at the plate with four RBIs. Johnston followed, going 2-2 with two RBIs, while Griffith was 2-3 at the plate with one RBI. Mascarello was 2-4 with three RBIs and Edwards was 2-4 with one RBI. Mullanack and Roberts were both 1-3 at the plate, where Mullanack had two RBIs and Roberts tallied one RBI.
Pitcher Tyler Gray threw five innings and secured his seventh win of the season. Miller McCathren came in to close the game with four strikeouts and only allowed two hits.
