CLEVELAND, Ga. (March 1, 2022) – On Tuesday, the Truett McConnell University baseball team traveled to Toccoa Falls, Ga. for a non-conference matchup against Toccoa Falls College. The Bears dominated after showing offense (24-12), and improved to an overall record of 9-7, while the Eagles fell to an overall record of 6-16.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Bears were first on the board with a Matthew Redmond single to center field. A Tanner Griffith single to right center scored Redmond to end the inning (1-0). The Eagles responded with two runs of their own, taking a 2-1 lead. In the second inning, TMU responded with a single from Jake Edwards and a Kodi Bishop homerun over the center field fence (3-1). A walk for Gage Smith and a single for Andrew Johnston put them on base to allow Mikal Mascarello to score them off a homerun to left field (6-2). The Eagles did not respond until the third inning, where they tallied three runs together to make it a one run game (6-5). In the fourth, Redmond, Mascarello and Ethan Roberts all scored to increase their lead to 9-5. The Bears bats were explosive in the fifth inning, starting with a Redmond single to load the bases. Johnston single to right field to score Bishop, followed by a Mascarello single to left field to score Redmond and Kiser (12-6). The game was ultimately put out of reach with a sacrifice hit from Griffith, scoring Jonston (13-6). The Eagles were able to muster up six more runs, but the Bears tallied 20 hits on the day to give them 24 runs and a 24-12 win.
LEADERS
Mascarello led the way at the plate, going 3-5 while recording five RBI's and two runs. Johnston followed, going 3-5 at the plate with four RBI's and three runs. Griffith was perfect, going 3-3 at the plate with three RBI's and one run. Bishop closed it out, going 3-6 and tallying three RBI's and five runs.
Pitcher Griffin Kanelos collected his second win of the season, recording one strikeout while only allowing two hits. Tyler Gray recorded three strikeouts on the day and allowed three hits. Phillip Braswell and Miller McCathren also recorded one strikeout apiece.
