TMU takes game one of series against Marian

EMERSON, Ga. (Feb. 4, 2022) - On Friday, the Truett McConnell University baseball team traveled to Emerson, Ga. to face Marian University at Lakepoint Sports. The Bears took the first game of the non-conference series from the Sabres, 5-2. 

PLAY-BY-PLAY

Tanner Griffith sparked the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and continued to score after stealing third and finding his way home on a wild pitch (1-0). The bottom of the third saw the Bears loaded the bases, featuring an Andrew Johnston single to right field, Mikal Mascarello hit by pitch and an Isaac Mullanack walk. Will Ingram battled in the box to earn an RBI walk, followed by a Mascarello RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to score Griffin Kanelos from third (3-0). 

Marian fought back in the top of the fifth and eighth inning (3-2), but the game was ultimately put out of reach in the bottom of the eighth as a Griffith single to right field scored Jake Edwards from third. The final run came from pinch runner, Ethan Roberts, who scored on a Johnston line drive to center field (5-2).

LEADERS

Griffith and Johnston individually led the way going 2-4 with one RBI apiece, followed by Mascarello and Kanelos who individually went 1-3 at the plate. Mullanack recorded a single hit and two walks, while Ingram recorded a single RBI.

Pitcher Cason Brown earned his first win of the season, recording five strikeouts over three innings and allowed a single run. Jared Johnson earned the save, while recording two strikeouts. Jonathan Joiner and Davis Richardson recorded a strikeout apiece.

UP NEXT

The Bears remain at Lakepoint Sports tomorrow for a double-header against Marian with Game 1 set for 11:00 a.m.
