CENTRAL, S.C. (February 15, 2022) – On Tuesday, the Truett McConnell University baseball team traveled to face Southern Wesleyan University for a non-conference match-up. In an offensive battle, the Bears fell short, 9-12. The Bears sit at a 5-4 overall record, while the Warriors rose to a 3-5 overall record.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Bears were first on the board with an Andrew Johnston walk, followed by a steal to second. Brady Wilson had a single to left field that scored Johnson in the first inning (1-0). In the second inning, the Knights scored their first run of the game, but left two on base (1-1). The third inning left the Bears behind with five runs scored by the Knights (1-6). TMU retaliated with a lead-off Mikal Mascarello single to left field, followed by another Wilson single. The Bears capitalized on an error that scored Mascarello, followed by a Cade Kiniry walk to load the bases where a hit from Kodi Bishop scored Tanner Griffith (3-6). The Knights responded with another two runs of their own (3-8).
The Bears continued to fight with a Johnston double, followed by a Mascarello double to score Johnston (4-8). A walk from Wilson and an error on the Knights led Mascarello to score to close the inning (5-8). The Knights hit their peak with another four runs in the fifth inning, which was their last of the day (5-12). In a late attempt, the Bears worked hard to fight back. A walk from Jake Edwards started the seventh inning, followed by a Mascarello single. An error on the Knights scored Edwards, followed by a Griffith single to score Mascarello (7-12). Griffin Kanelos hit a single up the middle to score Griffith, followed by Sam Reed with a single to left field to score Kanelos (9-12).
LEADERS
Mascarello led the way at the plate, going 3-5 while tallying three runs and one RBI. Griffith followed going 2-5 with 2 runs and one RBI. Wilson was 2-3 on the day with one RBI and one walk. Johnson recorded two runs and went 1-2 at the plate.
Kanelos tallied three strikeouts on the day, while John James, Jared Johnson and Dawson Sorrells recorded one strikeout apiece.
