Men's basketball plows through conference play

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Feb. 1, 2022) - On Tuesday, the Truett McConnell University men's basketball team went face to face with Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, St. Andrews University, where the Bears held nothing back as they secured a big 117-70 victory over the Knights. TMU extended their win streak to seven and rose to 15-8, 11-7 AAC, while the Knights fell to 2-19, 2-16 AAC.
 
Most notable, junior Brent Kelly set a new program record with 282 total career assists. TMU's win streak ties the record for consecutive wins in a season, and breaks the record for conference consecutive wins in a season. Additionally, the win set a new program record for largest margin in victory.
 
PLAY BY PLAY
TMU began the first half with a six-point run, featuring an Enocka Franky shot in the paint, jump shot by Brent Kelly and a CJ Brown layup (6-0). The Bears continued to increase in speed, maintaining a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, with their largest lead of 33 after a shot in the paint from Anderson Mwasele (57-24).
 
The second half saw no decrease in speed as TMU continued to widen the gap. An eight-point run sparked by four KJ Riley free throws, a dunk and a shot in the paint gave the Bears a 41-point lead. The game was ultimately put out of reach and clinched by TMU with a final score of 117-70.
 
LEADERS
Kelly led the way with 16 points and six assists, while Riley had 16 points, three steals and went 6-6 at the free throw line. Raul Arias-Ortega had 15 points and went 4-4 at the free throw line, followed by EJ Smith who had 12 points and two steals. Franky had 12 points and Mwasele had seven rebounds.
 
UP NEXT
The Bears travel on Thursday, Feb. 3, to face AAC foe, Columbia International University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
