Women's soccer closes 2022 season in NAIA Opening Round

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (November 17, 2022) – On Thursday, the Truett McConnell University women's soccer team concluded their 2022 season in the NAIA Championships Opening Round, hosted by No.1 Keiser University. The No.2 Lady Bears showed their grit in a 2-1 battle with No. 3 College of Idaho, ultimately finishing the season with a stellar overall record of 17-3-1.

TMU was seen recording a 16-game win streak, along with being crowned the 2022 AAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions, while punching their ticket to the NAIA National Championships for the fourth consecutive year and ranking as high as No. 18 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Both teams were evenly matched at the start, with the first shot of the game recorded in the 10th minute off the foot of Sydney League. Idaho responded with an earned corner kick, followed by scoring the first goal of the game in the 26th minute of play. TMU did not back down as they gained speed on offense with individual shots from Nadiia Ivanchenko and Ashley Johnson, while the final shot of the half by Johnson in the 41st minute missed just wide, leaving the Lady Bears down by one (1-0).

TMU brought the intensity in the second half with a shot on goal in the first five minutes from Kristin Beasley, along with a shot on goal by Ivanchenko in the 57th minute. The 61st minute saw the Lady Bears bridge the gap, when a ball from Johnson set the stage for League, who found the back of the net after battling for a shot in the box (1-1). The Lady Bears continued to put pressure on the Yotes defense with a shot and earned corner kick. Idaho did not back down, adding pressure of their own in the 70th minute with their second goal of the game to steal the lead (2-1). TMU remained resilient with four shots and two corner kicks, but ultimately fell after a final shot on goal by Kayla Boggess proved the Lady Bears last as they fell to a season ending score od 2-1.

LEADERS
League led the way for the Lady Bears with one goal and two shots, while Johnson tallied a single assist and three shots. Ivanchenko, Beasley, Bergevine and Boggess recorded a shot on goal apiece.
