TMU stumbles against Bulldogs on the road

ATHENS, Tenn. (November 17, 2022) - On Thursday, The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team suffered a tough loss on the road against Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Tennessee Wesleyan University. The Lady Bears worked hard to cut the Bulldogs lead but ultimately fell to a final score of 64-60, and are now sitting at an overall record of 1-5, 1-4 AAC. 

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Lady Bears were first to hit the board with a layup by Alysee Dobbs, while TWU did not hesitate to respond with a six point run (8-2). A Dobbs shot from the three-point arc, followed by a Tia Shelton jump shot lowered the Bulldogs lead, but TWU could not be stopped as the score sat at 17-9 heading in to the second quarter. The Bulldogs continued to press forward with a heavy lead, forcing TMU to work under pressure (28-18). TMU did not give in as they recorded an eight-point run, sparked by a jump shot and made free throw from Shelton (28-24). A good shot from Re'Tavia Floyd in the paint and at the three-point arc sent TMU into halftime down by only two (31-29). 

A clutch three-pointer from Dobbs saw the Lady Bears with their first lead of the day at the start of the third quarter (31-32), which sparked a strong run by the Bulldogs to steal back the lead (38-32). TMU worked to keep the lead in range with shots from Floyd and Dobbs, but TWU could no the stopped as they ended the quarter by 12. Once again the Lady Bears gained speed to decrease the lead from the start of the quarter, featuring a jumper by Camilla Callihan and layup by Sydnie Smith (53-47). Shots by Floyd and Gwyn Andrews keep the margins close, but a persistent TWU offense held the advantage and forced the Lady Bears to fall 64-60. 

LEADERS

Dobbs led the way with 19 points, eight rebounds and went 3-4 at the three-point arc. Floyd followed with 14 points, while Callihan had nine points and six rebounds. Shelton had seven points and five rebounds, followed by Kacie Williams who had four points and Quan Hilton who had three points. 

UP NEXT 

The Lady Bears return inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena on Saturday, Nov. 19, where they are set to face AAC competitor Bluefield University. Tipoff set for 2:00 p.m.
