LAURINBURG, N.C. (October 29, 2022)- The Truett McConnell University men's soccer team traveled to face Appalachian Athletic Conference member St. Andrews University, where the Bears concluded the 2022 regular season with a 3-1 victory. TMU rises to a record of 8-5-3, 5-5-2 AAC, while securing their spot in the No. 8 seed to compete in the AAC Tournament.
"I'm really proud of the performance the boys put in today," said Head Coach Scott Borchers. "They faced quite a bit of adversity in a tough environment and persevered. The boys are playing well at the right part of the season. I'm happy to see them reap some rewards for their hard work."
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Bears were hot out of the gates from the start with a shot on goal from Oscar Brennan in the first minute. Brennan took two corner kicks in the eighth minute, setting the stage for the first goal in the 23rd minute off the foot of Lucan Yates, assisted by Hendrik Metje (1-0). The Knights were aggressive on offense with shots of their own, forcing both teams to work hard under pressure. The Bears fought back with two shots on goal from Brennan, followed by a shot on goal from Adrian Hofherr to send TMU into the half with the lead (1-0).
In the second half, the Knights gained momentum to even the score (1-1). The Bears did not waste any time as they earned a corner kick, followed by back-to-back shots on goal from Jose Ventura. In the 80th minute, Yates found the back of the net once again off a ball from Nour Alamri for the second goal of the day to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. In the 83rd minute, a goal from Will Fraser-Gray, assisted by Max Farris tallied the final goal of the game to give TMU a 3-1 victory over the Knights.
LEADERS
Yates led the way for the Bears with two goals, followed by Fraser-Gray who had three shots, one on goal, and one goal. Metje, Alamri and Farris individually recorded a single assist, while keeper Daniel Santema had two saves on the day.
