Lady Bears bounce back to upset TWU

CLEVELAND, Ga. (January 26, 2022) - On Wednesday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team hosted Appalachian Athletic Conference rival, Tennessee Wesleyan University, where the Lady Bears bounced back to upset the Bulldogs, with a final score of 64-56. TMU improved to season record of 12-10, 8-8 AAC, while TWU fell to a record of 14-4, 13-3 AAC.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first quarter, both teams were neck and neck. The Lady Bears were able to strike first with a jumper from Re'Tavia Floyd. The Bulldogs retaliated with a five-point run to secure the lead. A jump shot from Quan Holton and a layup from Alysee Dobbs kept TMU in the game. A three-point shot from Dobbs left the Lady Bears trailing by one at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Bulldogs started out on top with a four-point rally. Three consecutive three-pointers from Floyd and two from Sydney Rumble put the Lady Bears behind by two to go into the half.
In the third quarter, Jessica Jackson was out of the gates with a jumper to even the score. An 11-point rally by the Lady Bears created a nine-point deficit to give them the lead. Multiple layups from Camilla Callihan, three pointers from Jackson and jumpers from Dobbs gave TMU a 45-34 advantage going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs were putting up a fight, while the Lady Bears showed their grit. Floyd started with a three pointer, followed by a good free throw from Callihan to keep the deficit at eight points. The Bulldogs managed to add points of their own, but two free throws from Rumble and Holton secured the 64-56 upset.

LEADERS
Floyd led the way offensively with 14 points on the evening, going 2-2 at the free throw line. Callihan followed with 13 points, going 5-8 from within the paint and had two rebounds. Rumble added 10 points, going 2-3 from behind the three-point arc, and tallied five rebounds. Dobbs had 10 points, going 4-8 in the paint and had eight rebounds. Holton led the way defensively with 11 rebounds, while contributing eight points.

UP NEXT
The Lady Bears remain inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena on Saturday, Jan. 29, where they will face Bluefield College, with tipoff set for 2:00 p.m.
