Bears secure second victory over TWU, extend win streak to five

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Jan. 26, 2022) - On Wednesday, the Truett McConnell University men's basketball team hosted Appalachian Athletic Conference competitor, Tennessee Wesleyan University, inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena. The Bears undermined the Bulldogs for the second time this season, coming out on top with a final score of 79-62. TMU rose to a record of 13-8, 9-7 AAC, while TWU fell 14-6, 11-5 AAC.
 
PLAY BY PLAY
In the first half, both teams were evenly matched. The Bulldogs were first to strike, but a jumper from Enocka Franky kept the score even. A layup from Brent Kelly and a dunk from Franky sent the Bears ahead. Layups from Franky and KJ Riley kept the lead in range, while a free throw from Cory Seitz and back-to-back three-point shots from Riley put TMU ahead by nine. As the Bulldogs tried to fight their way back, Kafunba Toure had a layup off a fast break to keep the deficit. Another three pointer from Riley and dunk from Franky sent the Bears into the half ahead, 38-31.
 
In the second half, the Bears were hot out the gates with a three pointer from Raul Arias-Ortega, a jump shot from Franky and two layups from CJ Brown. With a layup from Seitz, the Bears increased their deficit to 12 points. The Bulldogs managed to come within nine points, but TMU broke away again. A jump shot from Arias-Ortega, a layup from Akil Covington, Riley and a dunk from Seitz put the Bears ahead by 17. A layup and three-pointer from EJ smith sealed the game with a 79-62 upset over the Bulldogs.
 
LEADERS
Most notable, Franky had a double-double with 18 points, going 8-12 in the paint, and recording 13 rebounds. Riley followed with 12 points, going 5-11 in the paint. Smith tallied 11 points, going 3-6 from behind the three-point arc, and adding six rebounds. Brown had nine points, going 4-5 in the paint, and recording seven rebounds. Arias-Ortega had nine points, going 4-5 in the paint and 1-1 from behind the three-point arc.
 
UP NEXT
The Bears will remain inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena on Saturday. Jan. 29, hosting Bluefield College. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
