BABSON PARK, Fla. (August 27, 2021) – The Truett McConnell University men's soccer team traveled to face Webber International University Friday morning, where they clinched their first win of the season with a second half shutout of 2-0.
After experiencing the challenges of a rebuilding period last year, TMU has proven their hard work and dedication with a season opening win.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Period one saw the Bears aggressive on offense, earning a corner kick and taking two shots within the first five minutes of regulation. Webber responded with shots of their own, but goalie Riley Powers stayed sharp, shutting down any opportunity for the Warriors to take the lead. Both teams were even in shots for the remainder of the half, leaving the score 0-0.
TMU gained momentum in the second half, capable taking multiple shots, while Webber wasn't far behind. It wasn't until the 77th minute that Javier Morales scored the first goal of the game after rebounding a blocked shot by Justin Hicks (1-0). It was only up from there for the Bears as Nour Alamri took a shot of his own in the 82nd minute, only to be misplayed by the keeper, which then offered Lucan Yates the opportunity to find the back of the net for the second and final goal of the game, resulting in a score of 2-0.
LEADERS
Morales and Yates led the way individually with two shots on goal and one goal, followed by freshman Marco Vernazza who had three shots, two on goal, and freshman Hebert Lima who had four shots. Hicks had two shots, while senior Grant Farrell and sophomore Daniel Martin had a shot apiece. Sophomore Riley Powers recorded three saves on the day.
