Women's soccer collects big win in season opener

BLUFFTON, S.C. (August 21, 2021) - On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University women's soccer team secured their first win of the season on the road against the University of South Carolina Beaufort, with the game winning shot by Hannah Logue for her debut as a Lady Bear (1-0).

This past March when TMU and USCB went face-to-face, the game was forced into double overtime, resulting in a tied 1-1 game.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Lady Bears were hot out of the gates, with two shots on goal within the first five minutes of regulation by Natalie Alamri and Lauren Bergevine. USCB was not far behind, capable of taking shots of their own, but TMU stayed relentless on offense and defense to keep the score 0-0 at the half.

Truett outshot the Sand Sharks in the second half with five shots on goal, opposed to three, and it wasn't until the 68th minute of the game that Logue found the back of the net for the first and only goal of the game (1-0). USCB responded with multiple shots and two corner kicks, but the game ultimately resulted with TMU on top with a final score of 1-0.

LEADERS
Logue led the way with one goal, while Bergevine, Alamri, senior Sydney League, junior Kristin Beasley and sophomore Brianna Hernandez all individually had a shot on goal. Sophomore Eliska Dvorakova and freshmen Ruffa Meger and Amayia Lukie had a single shot of their own. Senior goalie Victoria Moore recorded two saves, followed by freshman Megan Darden who substituted in at goalie and recorded her first save of her career.

COACHES COMMENT
"Going into the game we told the girls that this early in the season it might not be pretty but we have to stick together and grind out a result," said Head Coach David McDowell."Today we faced some adversity in a number of different ways but this team showed immense character and resolve to get a fantastic win against a very good team on the road."

"As a staff, we knew from preseason we had a very talented group on our hands and today they also showed that they have the mental fortitude and grit to see our way through these tough type of games. Also, I have to give credit to Megan Darden who as a freshman played in goal for the first time ever and did superb without conceding a goal."

UP NEXT
The Lady Bears will travel to face Georgia Gwinnett College Wednesday, August 25, with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
