Bears steal fourth win from Toccoa

CLEVELAND, Ga. (April 20, 2021) – For the fourth time this season, the Truett McConnell University baseball team bested Toccoa Falls College back Tuesday night, inside the TMU Baseball Complex, with a final score of 10-7. The Bears are now sitting at a season record of 24-16, 12-11 AAC, while the Screaming Eagles fell to a record of 12-20.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The first two innings saw both teams scoreless, while the top of the third saw Toccoa make their way to the board to secure the first lead of the game (0-1). The Bears immediately responded in the bottom of the third, starting with Cason King reaching first on a walk and continuing to score off an RBI single from Mikal Mascarello (1-1). The Screaming Eagles added four more in the top of the fourth (1-5), but TMU was resilient in the bottom, capable of stealing the lead after two walked in runs (3-5) with bases loaded, followed by a sacrifice fly to right from Josh Johnston to score Jacob Ross from third (4-5) and an Andrew Johnston single up the middle to score the final two runs of the inning (6-5). Toccoa evened the score in the top of the sixth and seventh, but the game was ultimately put out of reach in the bottom of the seventh as the Bears tallied three more runs, sparked by a Devyn Munroe single, with Munroe continuing to score off a wild throw to first off Grant McDonel's bunt, followed by a King double to deep right-center which allowed two more runs to score (9-6). TMU was capable of scoring once more in the bottom of the eight, totaling a final score of 10-7.

LEADERS

Munroe led the way going 2-for-3 at the plate, along with two runs and two walks, while King went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs and three walks. McDonel went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and A. Johnston went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. J. Johnston and Mascarello individually went 1-for-4 with one RBI, followed by Mason Gaines and Julian Galassi who had one hit and one run apiece. Pitcher C.J. Thomas pitched the first three innings, recording a one strikeout, one walk, six hits and five runs. Jacob Adams relieved Thomas in the fourth, recording three strikeouts, with zero runs and two hits, followed by Craig Barton who pitched three straight strikeouts to end the game. Cason Brown earned the win, allowing zero hits and zero earned runs once the lead was secured, along with two strikeouts.

UP NEXT

The Bears are back inside the TMU Baseball Complex for an AAC series facing Columbia International University. The first game of the series will be Friday, April 20, at 6:00p.m., followed by the series double header which will be Saturday, April 23, with a start time at 1:00 p.m.
