TOCCOA, Ga. (Mar. 23, 2021) – For the third time this season, the Truett McConnell University baseball team came out on top in a midweek matchup with Toccoa Falls College. The Bears run ruled the Screaming Eagles 17-5, which put TMU at 13-11, 3-6 AAC and Toccoa at 9-14 on the season. TMU defeated Toccoa 14-10 in February and 13-4 earlier this month.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
After a leadoff hit by pitch by Julian Galassi, Josh Johnston got the Bears off to a hot start with two-run homerun at the top of the first (2-0). Toccoa was held scoreless in the bottom of the first and it was only up from there for the Bears. Tanner Griffith doubled to score Logan Nelson and Kodi Bishop (4-0), J. Johnston drove home Galassi once again with a single (5-0), Mikal Mascarello doubled to score J. Johnston (6-0) and Andrew Johnston singled to score Mascarello to put TMU out front by seven in the second (7-0).
The Screaming Eagles were held scoreless again before TMU added two more runs. Devyn Munroe sparked the third with a leadoff single before scoring on Nelson's single (8-0), while Griffith's batted ball allowed Cason King to score TMU's ninth run (9-0). Still holding the Screaming Eagles scoreless with just one hit, Mascarello smacked a two-run homer in the top of the fourth (11-0) and Munroe scored the Bears' 12th run on King's batted ball (12-0). Toccoa picked up the pace in the fourth to record five runs (12-5). The game, however, ultimately already proved to be out of reach as TMU added four more of their own in the fifth and one more in the sixth (17-5).
BY THE NUMBERS
Overall, TMU tallied a total of 18 hits to Toccoa's eight. The Bears were led by J. Johnston who went 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs and four runs. Mascarello followed with four RBIs (3-for-4), while Griffith went 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Nelson also had a perfect day at the plate (3-for-3) with two runs and a RBI. Galassi went 2-for-4 with three runs, A. Johnston went 2-for-3, Munroe went 2-for-5, and Grant McDonel went 1-for-2.
Freshman pitcher Gabe Dyar made the start and earned the win for TMU. Dyar threw three innings of one hit, zero runs, zero walks and two strikeouts. C.J. Thomas, Jacob Adams, Joshua Merritt and John James all relieved for an inning.
