CLEVELAND, Ga. (Mar. 12, 2021) – The Truett McConnell University softball team went face to face Friday evening, with Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Point University, inside the TMU Softball Complex. No. 24 TMU walked away with their second conference sweep with a score of 1-0 in game one and a score of 5-2 in game two. The Lady Bears increased to a record of 10-4, 4-0 AAC, while the Skyhawks declined to a record of 12-4, 7-3 AAC.
GAME ONE 1-0 | PITCHER'S DUEL
TMU's Bethany Hyde and PU's Allie Beilstein combined for a total of 12 strikeouts and five hits, but it was Hyde and the Lady Bears who came out on top. Junior Briley Lawson smacked a two-out homer over the left field fence on a 1-2 count (1-0), which ultimately allowed TMU to claim their first win of the day. The Lady Bears did not allow Point to get more than one runner on base at time, while TMU's closest opportunity to scoring again came in the sixth when two were left on base after Lauren Barrett's leadoff double. One of TMU's most notable defensive plays took place in the seventh when Mikayla Sullens made a diving double play at first.Â
LEADERS
Anna Thomas, Lawson and Barrett each had one hit. Hyde claimed her fifth win of the season after throwing a complete shutout game of two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The second game saw a gained momentum for both teams, as Point hit the board first in the top of the first (0-1), but the Lady Bears were quick to respond in the bottom with two scored runs from a Lawson double to deep left-center (2-1). The Skyhawks retaliated in the top of the second, capable of making the score even (2-2). A Justine Kennington double to left-center in the bottom of the third, however, scored the leading run for TMU (3-2). The Lady Bears capitalized in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs, starting with a Mattie Brooks double to deep right-center (4-2), immediately followed by a Kennington triple to right-center (5-2). TMU ultimately secured the win after going three and out on defense in the final two innings, resulting in a score of 5-2.
LEADERS
Thomas led the way going 3-for-4 at the plate, with a single run, followed by Lawson and Kennington who individually went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Brooks went 2-for-2, along with two runs and an RBI, while Sabrina Pestana Aguiar tallied a hit of her own.
Karley Hobbs earned her fourth win of the season, featuring four strikeouts, four hits, two walks and two runs.
