No. 9 TMU splits with Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (Feb. 21, 2021) – On Sunday, the Truett McConnell University softball team competed in a double header at Thomas University, losing game one with a score of 2-0 and winning game two with a final score of 4-0. The Lady Bears are sitting at .500 on the season with a record of 3-3, while Thomas sits at a record of 4-2.

GAME ONE 0-2

Both teams remained scoreless until the fourth inning, which saw TMU in the top with Mattie Brooks left on base in scoring position after advancing from first on an Ellie Abner single to right field, their best opportunity of the game. The bottom proved successful for the Night Hawks who earned two runs after a homerun over the left field fence (2-0), ultimately clinching the win with the Lady Bears unable to counteract on offense.

LEADERS

Senior Sara Sullivan and junior Briley Lawson individually went 1-for-3 at the plate, followed by sophomore Mattie Brooks and Abner who tallied a hit apiece.

Senior Bethany Hyde allowed three hits, two earned runs, two walks and tallied six strikeouts, her season high thus far.

GAME TWO 4-0

The Lady Bears came out hot in game two, capable of hitting the board first in the top of the second that started with a leadoff walk from Brooks who then scored from a Justine Kennington triple down the first base line (1-0). Lauren Barrett followed with a sacrifice hit to the third baseman to score Kennington (2-0). TMU had runners in scoring positions again in the top of the third due to an error in the field, resulting in no runs, but carried the momentum in the bottom of the third to get three straight outs, including two ground outs and a pop up to first base.

The top of the fourth saw the Lady Bears out front for good, which was sparked by an Alicia Price single to left center, followed by an Anna Thomas infield single and topped off with a Sullivan double to deep left center to score both base runners (4-0). TMU kept the Night Hawks scoreless for the remainder of the game, dominating on defense, and securing the win with a final score of 4-0.

LEADERS

Kennington led the way with going 3-for-4 at the plate, including an RBI and run. Price followed up going 2-for-3 and a run, while Sullivan followed with a hit of her own, along with a walk and two RBIs. Senior Katherine Kozlowski, Lawson and Thomas tallied a hit apiece, followed by Brooks who recorded a walk and a run.

Hobbs recorded her second win of the season, allowing two hits with zero walks or runs, and recording four strikeouts.
