CLEVELAND, Ga. (Feb. 10, 2021) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team's three-game win streak was snapped on Wednesday evening at the TMU Baseball Complex in a midweek matchup against Cumberland University with a final score of 4-3. The Bears fell to 5-2, 0-0 AAC on the season, while the Phoenix improved to 3-1, 0-0 MSC.
Â
After a scoreless first inning, the Phoenix got on the board first with a single to shallow right-center (0-1) in the second. Freshman Mikal Mascerllo led off in the bottom half with a walk to eventually match Cumberland's run (1-1), but the Phoenix went on to take the lead for good at the top of the third with two more runs (1-3). Cumberland added another run in the sixth (1-4), but the bottom of the sixth ultimately proved to be the difference.
Â
Kodi Bishop smacked a two-out grand slam over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth, which would have put the Bears out front by a run, but TMU's runner on third failed to touch home plate causing the runner on the second to pass him, which resulted in an automatic out. The Bears rallied, however, to score two runs in the eighth on a walk (2-4) and a Cumberland defensive error (3-4), but TMU ultimately left three on base and neither team scored the rest of the way.
Â
Freshman
Logan Nelson was responsible for TMU's lone hit, which was an RBI, while
Andrew Johnston added an RBI himself. Senior
Cason Brown took the loss after making the start for TMU. Brown threw four innings of three hits, three runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Junior
Brooks Rosser followed to relieve for three innings allowing four hits and led with three strikeouts.
Andrew Fry and
Jacob Adams relieved an inning apiece.
Â
Up next, the Bears will look to host Bob Jones University for a three-game weekend series. TMU will face the Bruins at 1:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 12, and 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 13.
