CLEVELAND, Ga. (Jan. 30, 2021) – The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team avoided the Appalachian Athletic Conference season sweep with Union College on Saturday afternoon inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena with a thrilling 14-point win (80-66), which was their third consecutive AAC win. In fact, the Lady Bears handed the Bulldogs (12-3, 11-2 AAC) just their second AAC loss, who currently rank second in the AAC, while improving to 8-10, 5-10 AAC on the year.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Right off the bat, the Lady Bears took off in the first quarter draining six 3-pointers on their way to gain an 18-point lead heading into the second (28-10). The second quarter saw the Lady Bears get ahead by as much as 18 multiple times but Union rallied to cut the deficit to 10 just before the half (38-28).
Â
Both teams were neck and neck in the third (20-20), which allowed Union to get within as little as five three times, but three consecutive
Re'Tavia Floyd free throws and a 3-pointer was the key in putting the Lady Bears back ahead by double figures. However, it all came down to the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Bulldogs fought to come in from behind by six with eight minutes to go (58-52), but it was
Aisya Davis' layup that put them ahead by 11, and it was only from there as TMU led by no less than double digits the rest of the way.
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
Four Lady Bears scored double figures and were led by Floyd, who scored 20, including four 3-pointers. Davis followed with 19 points,
Sierra Kendall had 17 points and
Quan Holton added 12. Kendall led with seven rebounds and three blocks, while
Brenna Tate, Davis, Holton, Floyd and
Camilla Howell each led with two assists. The team shot 48.1% from the field and 47.6% from the 3-point line (10-21), while the Bulldogs shot 37.3% from the field and 23.8% from the three.
