LANETT, Ala. (Sept. 22, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University men's golf team clinched third place for the season opener at the Point Men's Fall Invitational which took place on Monday-Tuesday. The Bears finished day one with a score of 309 and day two with a score of 285 which tallied a final score of 594, only two strokes shy of the runner-up, Appalachian Athletic Conference competitor, Reinhardt University.

TMU men's golf competed with an A team and ten others who competed individually. Sophomore Vic Mincey and freshman Nathaniel Thornton tied individually for 12th, Mincey shooting a 76 on day one but improved to a 73 on day two. Thornton made his debut on the A team as a freshman with a notable 75 and 74. The senior Trevor Plinck tied for 15th shooting par (72) the first day and 78 on day two. Aaron Schwendinger finished the first 18 with an 85 and improved by 11 strokes on day two (74).

Playing individually making their debut as TMU Bears were freshman Gus Proctor who placed sixth overall shooting an impressive 71 and 74, along with fellow freshman Eli Goff who placed seventh finishing day one with a 74 and 72 on day two. Tied for eighth was freshman Michael Murray who shot a 79 on day one and shaved down 11 strokes to shoot four under par on day two (68), a new freshman one day record. Alongside Plinck who individually tied at 15th was junior Ashby Schwendinger with a noteworthy 77 and 73, respectively.

"This was our first tournament since loosing two top 50 in the nation players to graduation this past year," said Head Coach Steve Patton. "I am definitely looking for a few young men to step up this year and fill the voids via left graduation. I was incredibly encouraged to have four of my top five scorers as true freshman and look forward to competing again next week."

The Bears are hitting the road next to compete at the Harbor Club at Lake Oconee on Monday, Sept. 28-Tuesday, Sept. 29.
