WEST POINT, Ga. (March 11, 2020) – The No. 9 Truett McConnell University softball team traveled to Point University for their third Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bears fell in game one 4-1 but bounced back with a 3-1 win in game two, which put them at 14-3, 5-1 AAC on the season.
GAME ONE 4-1
The Skyhawks were capable of scoring two right off the bat in the bottom of the first (0-2) but the top of the fourth saw freshman Justine Kennington leadoff with a single to shallow left and eventually score the Lady Bears' lone run of the game on Kathrine Kozlowski's sacrifice bunt squeeze (1-2). Point, however, answered with two more runs of their own in the bottom half (1-4) and TMU was never capable of recovering. The closest the Lady Bears got to scoring was at the top of the fourth when TMU left two on base after a leadoff double by senior Macey Dunaway.
LEADERS
TMU connected for a total of four hits in comparison to Point's eight. Kennington, senior Liz Bunton, Dunaway and freshman Ellie Abner tallied a hit apiece.
Senior Bethany Hyde made the start for TMU, while junior Karley Hobbs threw 5.1 innings to record two strikeouts.
GAME TWO 3-1
Point got up on the scoreboard first again in the bottom of the first (0-1) but Bunton scored the tying run at the top of the second on Abner's single to center (1-1). Both teams went head to head for three straight scoreless innings until Bunton's double sparked the sixth inning for the Lady Bears. Pinch runner Katie Carruth ran home on the double to score the go-ahead run (2-1) and senior Sarah Wills followed up with a sacrifice bunt squeeze to give the Lady Bears a two-run cushion (3-1). The Skyhawks went on to leave two on base in the bottom half and TMU also left two on base in the seventh, but Hobbs' three up three down outing in the bottom of the seventh ultimately sealed the deal.
LEADERS | HOBBS' ONE-HITTER
Bunton and Alicia Price led the offense going 2-for-3, while senior Jaden Morrison and Abner added a hit apiece.
Hobbs, the junior All-American, earned the win after pitching a complete game to allow a single hit. In fact, the one hit did not happen until the sixth inning. In addition, Hobbs recorded two strikeouts.
