SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 25, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University men's golf team competed in the San Antonio Shootout at TPC San Antonio, hosted by Texas Wesleyan University, on Monday and Tuesday. This same course will host the Valero Texas Open on April 2 – April 5, which is a PGA Tour Event.

The Bears placed fifth of a deep competitive field of 16 teams with a 942 through 54 holes. TMU fell to No. 10 Wayland Baptist (1st), No. 8 Texas Wesleyan (2nd), No. 15 Morningside (3rd) and Houston-Victoria, who is receiving votes, but defeated No. 19 Grand View (T9) and No. 23 Johnson & Wales (6th).

Senior Dawson Day led the Bears individually finishing fourth overall, of 85 golfers, which landed him a spot on the All-Tournament team. Day shot a 75 and 74 through the first two rounds, and then a 77 on day two (226). Fellow senior, and NAIA All-American, Matt Smith followed tied for 19th after carding a 79, 76 and 80 (235). Three strokes behind him was another senior, Luke Peavy, in 26th with a 77, 78 and 83 (238). Sophomore Jackson Boone tied for 56th with a 249 and fellow sophomore Jhett Lewis rounded out the Bears' results in 58th with a 250.

"This was a tough tournament to be our first of the year," Head Coach Steve Patton said. "The good news besides the scores is that we got better this week and we are learning how to play in very windy conditions and learn how to handle adversity. Dawson played some incredible golf for us this week. I can't wait to get back on the course next week!"

Up next, the Bears are back on the road for the Gulf Shores Invitational on Monday, March 2 – Tuesday, March 3.
