Baseball blanks Ohio Christian in game one

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Feb. 21, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team hosted Ohio Christian University on Friday afternoon for game one of a three-game nonconference weekend series at the TMU Baseball Complex. The Bears shutout the Trailblazers 8-0 to improve to 5-9 on the season, while OCU fell to 4-12.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

After two scoreless innings, freshman Tanner Griffith sparked the second inning with a single up the middle to score sophomores Andrew Johnston and Jacob Ross (2-0). Fellow freshman Brian Meyer also singled up the middle to score two; Grant McDonel and Tanner Griffith (4-0). Neither team was capable of scoring in the third but A. Johnston's batted ball allowed freshman Devyn Munroe to put the Bears ahead by five in the bottom of the fourth (5-0). TMU's sixth run happened on another Griffith single in the bottom of the fifth when he drove home McDonel (6-0).

The sixth inning saw OCU with the bases loaded but sophomore Brooks Rosser struck out his final batter for the third out to keep the Trailblazers scoreless. Ross added another run for TMU on a stolen base in the seventh when McDonel was in a run-down (7-0) and senior Matthew Dunaway's single through the hole at shortstop scored Munroe for TMU's final run of the day (8-0), which further proved to put the game out of reach for OCU.

LEADERS

Griffith led the way with three hits (3-for-5), including three RBI's, while Munroe and McDonel went 2-for-4 with two RBI's for McDonel. Ross also contributed to the offense with a hit (1-for-2).

Rosser was credited his second win of his sophomore season after throwing six innings of two hits, zero runs, five walks and six strikeouts. Jonathan Joiner relieved for two innings to tally one strikeout and senior Evan Bensch threw the final inning to walk one and strikeout one.
