CLEVELAND, Ga. (Feb. 19, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University men's basketball team defeated Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Point University, who dropped to No. 10 in the AAC standings, 89-69 on Wednesday evening inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena for their home finale. The Bears improved to 8-20, 4-19 AAC on the season, while the Skyhawks fell to 15-14, 11-12 AAC.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Bears came out hot scoring the first nine points of the game (9-0) and then holding the Skyhawks to two points to lead by as much as 17 eight minutes into the game (19-2). Sophomore Antonio Bonilla's stellar first half of 21 points allowed TMU to earn their largest lead of 27 (49-22) with another bucket in the paint with 1:59 to go before the half. After a 23-point cushion at halftime (49-26), the Skyhawks picked it up to eventually outscore by three (40-43) but the game ultimately proved to be out of reach. In fact, the closest Point got to the Bears was by 14 points and TMU continued to lead by as much as 25.
The Bears outscored the Skyhawks 17-4 on second chances but both teams scored 26 points in the paint. TMU also scored 16 points off turnovers in comparison to Point's seven. Overall, the Bears outrebounded 45-37 and had a total of nine steals in comparison to the Skyhawks' four.
LEADERS
Bonilla led the way with a career high of 33 points, including going 5-for-6 from behind the 3-point line. Marlon Allen recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Enocka Franky scored 14. Brent Kelly added 11 points and three steals.
