LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Feb. 12, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team traveled to No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett College on Wednesday evening for their ninth game of the 2020 campaign. After the Bears pulled ahead 4-1 in the third inning, the Grizzlies rallied to get out front for good to secure the 6-4 victory. In fact, TMU out-hit the Grizzlies 11-6 but the Bears fell to 3-6 on the year, while GGC improved to 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Grizzlies were capable of scoring an earned run in the bottom of the first on a double (0-1), but the Bears recorded their biggest outing in the third. Sophomore Will Ingram singled to spark the four-run inning by the Bears with freshman Tanner Smith following up with a single himself, Josh Johnston reaching base on a walk and Calob Rowland hitting a grand slam on a 2-1 count that scored them all (4-1). After Truett held the Grizzlies scoreless in the bottom half of the third and left three on base in the top of the fourth, GGC responded with two homers, four total earned runs, of their own in the bottom of the fourth to get back out front (4-5).
TMU again left three on base in the fifth but a triple to deep left-center field allowed another run for the Grizzlies in the seventh (4-6). The closest the Bears got to scoring again was in the top of the eighth when two were left on base.
LEADERS
Ingram led going perfect at the plate with a career best of three singles (3-for-3), while Griffith went 3-for-5. Fellow freshman Devyn Munroe had two hits (2-for-5), while Rowland, Connor Bearden and Brian Meyer added a hit apiece.
Freshman Hagan Jenkins made the start for the Bears throwing three innings of four hits, five runs, four walks and four strikeouts. Senior Nick Hammonds relieved for an inning but freshman Andrew Fry threw the final four allowing two hits, one run, three walks and six strikeouts.
