WEST POINT, Ga. (Aug. 22, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University women's soccer team went up against Thomas University at a neutral site, Point University, for their 2019 season opener. The Lady Bears, who are receiving votes in the NAIA national top 25, took the win against the Nighthawks 2-1.

"Really strong performance in our first game," Head Coach David McDowell said. "Had an early setback with their goal but really loved the girls' response to stick to the game plan and not panic. We have been familiar with their character and bravery before and today they showed again that even with early adversity, they stick together and figure it out. Always hard to win the first game and this has set a really good foundation going forward."

The Nighthawks were capable of scoring on TMU within the first two minutes of the game, however the Lady Bears refused to stay behind. TMU's matching goal resulted from an impressive team buildup. Freshman Kristin Beasley, on the wing, found the feet of sophomore Sydney Ziglar in the midfield, who then set up fellow sophomore Lydia Williams to go 1v1 against the goalkeeper (1-0). Later on in the second half, Beasley found the feet of Ziglar again but this time it was outside the 18. Ziglar took a quick touch and found the back of the net right under the crossbar which secured the win (2-1).

Up next, the Lady Bears will face Warner University on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 5:30 p.m., again at Point University as a neutral site. TMU's home opener will be on Saturday, Sept. 7, when they host No. 3 Southeastern University.
