Bears knock off No. 2-seeded Bryan to advance to semi-finals in AAC tourney

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (May 3, 2019) – The No. 3-seeded Truett McConnell University baseball team defeated the No. 2-seeded Bryan College (8-5) on Friday afternoon in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament to advance to the semi-finals. The win eliminated the No. 16 Lions and forces another matchup with No. 6-seeded Union College at 9 a.m., on Saturday, May 4.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Lions were capable of scoring a run in the first and second innings to immediately get out front (0-2). However, the Bears picked up the pace in the bottom of the third. Austin Bishop and Josh Johnston sparked the inning with a single apiece, but it was Patrick Overstreet's single to left field that scored the Bears' first run (1-2). Nonetheless, freshman John Michael McRae followed up with a double deep down the right field line to put TMU out front for good (3-2).

The Bears went on to dominate the fifth inning. After holding Union hitless and scoreless in the top half, TMU scored four more runs in the bottom half. Mason Gaines' sacrifice fly to left scored McRae, Connor Bearden's double down the right field line scored Calob Rowland and Evan Bensch's single through the hole at second base scored Jackson Meadors and Bearden (7-2). Bryan responded with a run of their own at the top of the sixth (7-3) and homered at the top of the seventh (7-4) but the Bears scored once again in the bottom of the seventh when Bensch ran home on Overstreet's bunt (8-4).

At the top of the ninth, Bryan scored one more on a wild pitch (8-5) and loaded the bases with two outs. However, Craig Barton struck out his 12th batter (swinging) at the plate to clinch the win.

Barton was credited the win after pitching a complete game. The sophomore allowed six hits, three earned runs while striking out 12.

LEADERS

Gaines went 2-for-3 with one RBI while Bishop and Rowland went 2-for-4 with one run scored each. McRae tallied two RBI's (2-for-5) with a 2B while Bearden added a 2B.

UP NEXT
