No. 16 Lady Bears split twin bill with Reinhardt

CLEVELAND, Ga. (April 2, 2019) – Senior Kaitlynn Johnson's walk-off single clinched the game one win (5-4) but the No. 16 Truett McConnell softball team fell in game two (3-1) against Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Reinhardt University on Tuesday evening at the TMU Softball Complex. The Lady Bears moved to 29-7, 14-2 AAC on the year while the Eagles moved to 22-13, 13-5 AAC.

GAME ONE (5-4)

The Lady Bears got up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on Briley Lawson's ground out (1-0) and the Eagles responded with two runs of their own in the second (1-2). However, TMU got back out front in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Liz Bunton singled through the hole at second base with bases loaded to score freshmen Kataryna Fuller and Alicia Price (3-2).

TMU held Reinhardt scoreless at the top of the fifth and Price's single to left-center field drove Sullivan across home plate to put the Lady Bears out front by two (4-2). The Eagles rallied in the sixth and seventh to score a run in each which forced the game into extra innings (4-4).

Most notable in the top of the eighth, senior Brie Levy threw a runner out from right field who was running home. The Lady Bears held the Eagles scoreless and Johnson's walk-off single sealed the deal.

LEADERS

Bunton led going 2-for-4 while Johnson, Sullivan, Briley Lawson, Price and Jaden Morrison added a hit apiece.

Bethany Hyde made the start on the mound throwing the first 5.1 innings allowing five hits and striking out three. The reigning AAC pitcher of the week, Karley Hobbs, was credited the win after throwing the final 2.2 innings allowing three hits and striking out three.

GAME TWO (3-1)

Reinhardt started out on the right foot in the second game recording three runs in the bottom of the first. Though TMU held the Eagles scoreless the rest of the way, the Lady Bears struggled to capitalize at the plate connecting for just three hits. Pinch hitter Kathrine Kozlowski's single to shallow center scored the Lady Bears' lone run (1-3) but the first inning proved to ultimately doom TMU.

LEADERS

Johnson, Price and Kozlowski each tallied a hit apiece. Freshman Sydney Blackmon made the start and was handed the loss while Hobbs threw the rest of the way allowing two hits, one walk and striking out three.
