Bears dominate midweek matchup

CLEVELAND, Ga. (March 26, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25, racked up 16 hits in Tuesday's dominating win over Hiwassee College at the TMU Baseball Complex (16-8). The Bears improved to 18-9, 10-2 AAC on the year while the Tigers declined to 16-6.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Tigers recorded seven runs in the top of the third inning but the Bears refused to stay behind. After freshman Hayden Harris walked, senior Austin Bishop bunted and reached on a base hit. A few more walks scored the Bears' first run of the game (1-7). Freshman John Michael McRae's single through the hole at shortstop drove home Bishop (2-7). Calob Rowland was hit by a pitch (3-7), Mason Gaines singled to left field (5-7), freshman Connor Bearden singled to right field (6-7) and Bishop walked to tie the game back up (7-7).

Hiwassee was held hitless and scoreless in the fourth but sophomore Jackson Meadors sparked the go-ahead inning for the Bears. Meadors smacked his first homer of the day over the right field fence on a 3-1 count (8-7). Freshman Connor Bearden then singled to right field to score McRae and Rowland (9-7). The Tigers were only allowed one more run the rest of the way (9-8).

Meador's led off with his second homer of the day in the bottom of the seventh, also over the right field fence, but this time on a full count (10-8). Bearden's triple to left-center scored McRae to put the Bears at a three run advantage (11-8). The Bears went on to add four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to further put the game out of reach (16-8).

LEADERS

Bearden led the way going 4-for-5 with four RBI's. Meadors followed going 3-for-4 with three RBI's. Bishop went 2-for-3 while McRae and Rowland added two hits apiece.

Freshman Avery Hopper earned the win after the throwing the first five innings allowing five hits and striking out three. Junior Nick Hammonds was credited the save after holding Hiwassee scoreless in the final four innings.
