No. 17 Lady Bears split first AAC DH on the road

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 22, 2019) – The No. 17 Truett McConnell University softball team split an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader for the first time this season at Milligan College on Friday afternoon (3-1, 2-1). The Lady Bears moved to 22-6, 7-1 AAC on the year while the Buffs moved to 9-13, 7-7 AAC.

GAME ONE (3-1)

After a scoreless first inning, Milligan got up on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second after a couple of hits and a defensive error (0-1). The Buffs scored two more times in the third (0-3) but freshman Briley Lawson drove home Kaitlynn Johnson on a single through the hole at second base in the top of the fourth (1-3). Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way. The closest the Lady Bears got to scoring was in the top of the sixth when batters were left on first and third.

LEADERS

Johnson led the way going 2-for-3 while Lawson went 1-for-2 and Macey Dunaway went 1-for-3. Each team tallied a total of four hits.

Bethany Hyde was handed the loss after throwing a complete game striking out four.

GAME TWO (2-1)

The second game saw another pitcher's duel while the Lady Bears swung for three hits in comparison to Milligan's two. The Buffs recorded an unearned run in the fifth (0-1) but the Lady Bears earned their first run in the top of the sixth. Sara Sullivan smacked a double down the right field line which drove home Dunaway to tie it up (1-1). TMU rallied in the seventh after a hit, a couple of walks and hit by pitch with two outs. Pinch runner Misty Goodman scored the winning run after Jaden Morrison walked (2-1).

Karley Hobbs went on to hold the Buffs hitless and scoreless in the bottom half of the seventh to clinch their seventh AAC win.

LEADERS

Sullivan, Lawson and Wilson all tallied a hit. Hobbs earned her 14th win of her sophomore campaign to remain perfect on the mound. Hobbs held the Buffs to just two hits and did not give up an earned run while striking out five.

UP NEXT             

The Lady Bears have a quick turnaround as they face Union College on at Saturday, March 23, at 1:00 p.m. (DH), in Barbourville, Ky.
