CLEVELAND, Ga. (March 19, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25 poll, defeated Toccoa Falls College for the second time this season on Tuesday afternoon at the TMU Baseball Complex (7-4). The Bears improved to an overall season record of 15-8, 8-1 AAC.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
A few singles put the Screaming Eagles up on the scoreboard once in the first inning (0-1) but the Bears responded with a bigger outing in the third. After freshman Connor Bearden reached base on a misplayed grounder, junior Evan Bensch bunted and reached on a base hit. Senior Austin Bishop hit a sacrifice bunt and was put out but with runners on second and third, junior Josh Johnston singled to center to drive them home (2-1). Nonetheless, Patrick Overstreet followed with a dinger over the left field fence on a 2-1 count (3-1). Overstreet now has 32 career home runs.
Toccoa Falls tied it back up immediately in the top of the fourth (3-3) but Overstreet sent Johnston home for a go-ahead run with a single to left (4-3). The Screaming Eagles scored their final run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to tie it back up one more time (4-4).
Overstreet, however, singled again to score Tyler Pruett to put TMU out front for good (5-4). Two more runs came when John Michael McRae sent a deep fly ball right field (7-4).
LEADERS
Overstreet had an outstanding day at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBI's. Johnston and Mason Gaines followed going 2-for-4 while Jackson Meadors and Bensch went 1-for-2.
Senior Ryan Reagan made the start on the mound pitching 3.1 innings allowing five hits, three runs and striking out two. Freshman Avery Hopper earned the win after throwing the next four innings allowing five hits, one run and striking out two. Junior Nich Hammonds was credited the save after relieving Hopper in the final 1.2 innings to allow one hit while striking out two.
